"Pro-Life versus Pro-Death"

Deuteronomy 30.19 “The Message”

“I call Heaven and Earth to witness against you today: I place before you Life and Death, Blessing and Curse. Choose life so that you and your children will live.

Moses gave the people choices. Every good leader does that. School teachers, politicians, parents, pastors, police, even the Lord Himself. All of them offer choices.

Choices are usually simple. In the case of Moses and the people of God, the choices were very simple... Life or Death.

In the abortion debate there are only two choices really… Life or Death. This is not a debate between Pro-Choice and Pro-Life. To support or oppose a woman’s right to choose is not the pertinent issue. Life or Death are the real issues, not Life or Choice.

Every pregnant woman has a choice to make… give birth or kill her baby; that is, abort. She may choose to abort whether it is legal or not. Legalized abortion simply makes the choice for Death an easier one. It softens the consequences… somewhat. Even if abortion is permissible by law, that does not make it permissible by conscience. The woman and man who make the choice to abort in a country that allows abortion still face the consequences of conscience.

In the abortion debate, there is a high cost for every choice you make. Choose Life and you will have another hard choice to make... raise the child or relinquish your child to adoptive parents. There is nothing cheap or easy in the choice for Life. Choose Death and you will eventually and deeply ponder your decision to terminate your child’s life. That too is a weighty choice with profound and lasting consequences.

Choose Life “and your children will live.” Choose Death and they will not live. It’s a simple decision, but it’s not an easy one. In the long run, a choice for Life may cost you a whole lot less.

I'm a moderate New York liberal who is pro-choice, but nothing can ever feel right about abortion.

Still, there are circumstances where the plight of the woman outweighs her decision to abort. Some women endure harrowing circumstances that we can't even imagine, and when they find themselves pregnant, I can certainly understand their wish to end a pregnancy. I can't be a woman's judge, as only she knows what she can or can't handle, and we must show our compassion to her, too.

I know it can seem so simple, the life or death choice, but it never, ever is.

This is such a hot-button issue that I wasn't sure if I should reply to this post or not (I've been thinking about it for a few days), but all I really want to say, really, is that women in this predicament are human beings who deserve our love and understanding, too. Anyone I know who's ever had an abortion has felt it in her soul. They hated making that decision, and it wasn't cavalier or easy.

Thanks Mary Ann. Compassion and understanding for a woman who has contemplated or made the decision to abort is always appropriate. I will never truly know how that decision must feel to a woman caught in the difficult circumstance of an unwanted pregnancy. While the choice might be simple, I assume it could NEVER be easy. And regardless of the choice made, there are costly consequences. Thanks for weighing in.

I'm happy to see that over the years, pro-lifers have put their money where their mouth is and have opened hundreds of centers nationally to help women give birth.

When I was in college, there wasn't this option. Pro-lifers would simply say, "Don't do it," but this didn't help the scared young woman who didn't necessarily want to abort, but didn't know what else to do. There was nowhere for them to go to find loving support and very real assistance.

Even though pro-choicers have dogged these centers somewhat, treating them as some kind of brainwashing facilities, in my mind, the pro-lifers scored a serious point for their side by taking on the monumental task of financing these places. Anyone who's ever organized anything on a large scale understands just how big a job this has been.

The show "30 Days" did an episode where a young woman who'd had an abortion went to live in one of these places for 30 days. It was SO intense...and enlightening to get a glimpse into how these centers work and what they actually do. I was impressed.

Thanks Mary Ann. Anyone who claims to be pro-life should be supportive of every aspect of the young mother's journey toward giving birth and put their money where their mouth is, as you say. I fully agree with you. Thanks for sharing.
